Each reader has a favorite genre. Someone reads thrillers, someone likes detective stories. And there are many lovers of historical novels. But there are books that made a splash in the world of literature this year and they are worth reading to everyone.

"One of us is lying," Karen M. McManus

One of the best books of 2018, which is read in one breath thanks to an intrigue that will persist until the very last chapter. In the center of the novel are five high school students who are left as punishment after school, but only four of them will then return home. The police have no doubt that the fifth student, Simon, was killed because his favorite activity was to reveal the most disgusting secrets of his classmates on the Internet. Under suspicion is a round pupil, the first beauty of the school, a rising baseball star and a young criminal on probation. Each of them had their own reasons to get rid of Simon. Readers gave the highest score to this novel for its amazing atmosphere and ease of reading, for an unpredictable ending with topical conclusions about how, thanks to the Internet, you can find out everything about a person. This story is not about one murder, but about the ruined psyche and the lives of several people - just because no one noticed their madness in time.

Cinder and Ella, Kelly Oram

The main character Ella Rodriguez gets into a car accident, after which her life turns into hell. For several months, the hospital and the death of her mother are painful for the girl, but she has a secret penpal. Ella does not even realize that Brian Oliver is not just an ordinary guy, but a famous Hollywood actor, in whom all the girls of her age are in love. Will they be able to be together? The book is touching, deep and sometimes funny. She once again proves that a fairy tale has a right to exist in the modern world. The entire book can be parsed into quotes. The novel, included in the ranking of the best books of 2018, is recommended for those who simply crave strong emotions.

The Night Train, Emily Barr

Lara Finch has everything that is required for a happy life: a cozy house and a caring husband. But one day she gets tired of such a life, goes to the south of England in order to find work and spends the night on the train with the first man he meets. That might have been the end, but Lara’s night companion is found dead. The police have no doubt that the couple did not share something. But the girl disappears. The reader will find out where Lara Finch disappeared and who killed the young man. Perfect for reading on quiet home evenings and will provide an opportunity to relax from the hustle and bustle. This is a purely ladies' novel, therefore it is recommended for the fair sex.

"Bones and Stardust," Redgrain Lebowski

The best books of 2018 include this fantasy novel. Every night on Earth is now accompanied by Silence, which is a cruel, merciless fog, full of terrible creatures, and grief to those who did not manage to hide with the onset of curfew. And no one has an idea where the Silence came from. The main character Adele works as a journalist. She wants to write an article about what is happening, but this requires learning as much as possible about Silence. And she decides to take a desperate step - to remain on the street after the announcement of the curfew. What will come of it, remains to be seen by readers.

"Woman at the Window," A.J. Finn

The story is interesting precisely for the main character and all the events described in this detective story could very well have happened in real life. Anna Fox is a child psychologist by occupation. She has to endure a terrible tragedy in her life, and she becomes a hostage in her own home. She stops communicating with the outside world and spends her time watching old films and a glass of wine. She has one more passion ... She likes to monitor her neighbors through the lens of her camera. And one day Anna becomes a witness to a crime in one prosperous family. The police do not believe her testimony. She herself has to get to the truth. The reader is waiting for an incredible denouement. Recommended for lovers of psychological detective stories.

"When the abyss is under your feet," Dennis Lehane

The novel begins with a story about the life of the main character, about her childhood and adolescence, about the influence of the mother on her fate. But the girl grows up and begins to understand that her father is not enough in her life. His search will last until marriage. But in the finale, the author knocks everything upside down. The husband is not at all the man for whom he claims to be, all events in life take on a strange connotation, grow dull, become suspicious and, finally, endless paranoia covers everything. The author gives only a hint of a clue; the reader has only a lot to conceive.

“Pigeon Tunnel. Stories from My Life.”, John Carré

This novel is recommended for those who prefer to read memoirs. This is not even an autobiography, but a collage of memories written by the luminaries of the detective genre. Readers are waiting for stories from life in Germany in the early sixties, in Russia in the early nineties, conversations with the iron lady Margaret Thatcher and Yasser Arafat, the opportunity to work with Francis Ford Coppola, meetings with famous scouts and spies and memories of parents - about the mother who left the family and about the adventurer father. In the original language, the book was published back in 2016, and now it can already be read in Russian.

"Rain in Paris", Roman Senchin

The protagonist of the novel goes to Paris in the hope of breaking out of a strip of failures and personal turmoil. He indulges in memories, scrolling through his memory all his life, is nostalgic for his youth and does not even leave the hotel. But the novel is not about Paris at all, but about the departure of Russian culture not only from the post-Soviet space, but also from many regions of Russia. And the finale finally explains why the hero of the novel went to Paris, because even there it rains, and people like him will always find an excuse for their laziness and inactivity.

Reading is always relevant, because those who read books are more likely to succeed in life, rather than those who wipe the sofa in front of the TV. It’s nice to know that we belong to one of the most read nations. Books have long become our loyal friends and advisers in making difficult decisions, they help us survive difficult times and brighten up hours of boredom.
